Having seasons that change the landscape and even affect the fauna/flora.
For example, some plants availables only a precise season or some creatures that hibernate etc.

LunaCould also be a couple of seasonal quest or events that occur once a year. They stay special but new players can get the items, cosmetics, pets etc. if they keep playing the game.
The quest could also vary a bit, so long time players have a reason to do them again
Its something you put a lot development work in at the start and then reuse it every year and it keeps everyone busy. -
